Introduction
Saṃskṛta Kavi-Kāvya Kadambakam is a comprehensive digital knowledge portal conceived and developed by Samskriti Foundation®, Mysuru, with the support of the Sahitya Akademi, Ministry of Culture, Government of India. This unique initiative seeks to document, preserve and present the lives, literary contributions and enduring legacies of Sanskrit poets and authors who have shaped the rich literary heritage of Bhāratavarṣa from ancient times to the present.
Across the length and breadth of Bhārata, poets, playwrights, philosophers, scholars and literary visionaries have contributed to an immense body of literature encompassing mahākāvyas (epic poems), khaṇḍakāvyas (minor poems), nāṭakas (dramas), campūkāvyas (prose-poetry compositions), devotional hymns, didactic poetry, lyrical compositions and numerous other literary forms. Their works reflect the social, cultural, philosophical and aesthetic sensibilities of their times while transcending geographical and chronological boundaries.
This portal endeavours to bring both the celebrated and the lesser-known luminaries of Sanskrit literature into a common platform of knowledge and appreciation.
More than a biographical directory, Saṃskṛta Kavi-Kāvya Kadambakam is envisioned as a comprehensive literary handbook that explores each poet's life, historical and geographical context, principal works, distinctive literary style, thematic concerns, philosophical outlook and contribution to the evolution of Sanskrit literature. Particular emphasis is placed on identifying the significance, uniqueness and literary impact of each poet, enabling readers to appreciate not only what they composed, but also why their contributions remain important.
